Hi Julie, I'm going to try both versions of Ring My Bell and will keep you posted. (The whole idea cracks me up!) I've been a longtime fan of Camille's podcast. Such smart, inspiring insights about the writing life. Love Nina's podcast too. I missed her tips for starting one. I keep saying I will and even designed a logo ... two years ago. Maybe after the 8-minute version of Ring My Bell, I'll get moving. 🤣

I thought you may have mentioned Camille's podcast to me in the past, but I wasn't sure if I was remembering that right! And I am very excited for your podcast. Please do keep me posted on all the luck that Ring My Bell brings you.

I loved This is a Gardening Show!! I wish there were more episodes. And I totally plan to use that tip about planting tomato plants deep.

I know, hopefully they will make more! I'm fascinated by them putting the tomato pots in water baths, too. Also, the kid with 12 children was great 😂

I'm so glad you checked out Camille's podcast! When I'm feeling down about writing or publishing, I swear there's an episode that brings me back around. Enjoy!

Yes! I feel like there are so many ups and downs in writing that it's a great resource to have so I'm glad I saw your rec :)

I tell anyone who will listen about the Career Novelist podcast -- maybe you saw one of my IG stories? ha!--because she is so good about discussing mindset, which indeed applies to any kind of writer. She has helped me finally drop some unhelpful myths I clung to for too long and to be more honest with myself about what I want and what I am willing to do for it.

STANDUP SERIES: We just discovered Crashing, 3 seasons (HBO, 2017-2019), with comic Pete Holmes. Very autobiographical (I'm almost done listening to his memoir, COMEDY SEX GOD; lots of overlap). Have you seen it? Having watched a fair number of movies and TV shows about comics lately (including Hacks, which I always enjoy), I find his the most realistic in terms of showing the grind, the slow improvement arc, the community of standup people with all their distinct personalities. I love that he uses lots of real comedians playing themselves as minor characters.

I maybe did see your instagram stories at some point about the podcast?! My memory is spotty these days (blaming perimenopause). I listened to part of a Career Novelist episode about defining success while on a walk, but realized I needed to pause so I could write some of her tips down. It does seem really helpful.

And I do not know Crashing and appreciate the rec! I've heard Pete Holmes on Mike Bribiglia's podcast and have intended to read Comedy Sex God too, so I need to check out both the book and the show!

How funny, I’m reading Heart the Lover as we speak! It is sad though.

Julie Vick's avatar

Oh, nice! I did like it. I also realized there is an earlier book with some of the same characters that I maybe should have read first? But putting that on my to-read list too.

I love Hacks so much! I'm sad it's ending. I mean, I can see that the storyline has sort of reached its natural end, but I'm going to miss the Deborah-Ava relationship so much.

Yes, I've had the same thought! I think it's probably good that it's the last season, but it's also sad. I feel like I saw somewhere that the creators had the end of the show planned from the beginning, so now I'm even more curious to see where it goes.

Good Humor by CK Steefel's avatar

Great info. Thx for sharing! Does Real Simple like humor in these categories? 🙏🏻🤷‍♀️

Real Simple used to run a backpage satirical humor piece in their print magazine, which was amazing (and they ran a few of my pieces), but unfortunately, that no longer exists.

I do think you could pitch them an essay with humorous elements, though. I published a travel essay with them online that had some humor in it.
