Thanks, Julie! Someone in my writing group just wrote a humourous story that would work well in a travel magazine. Are the travel mags you list in your publications guide all places that accept humor pieces? I wasn't sure if that guide is focused on humor or just a general guide. Thank you!!

I think any travel places that take first-person essays would potentially take ones with humor in them (I'm assuming it's a humorous first-person essay?) -- I think Fodor's and Business Insider might be good potential options to start with!

It is, thank you! But still wondering if everything on that list is focused on humor writing or not.

Julie Vick's avatar

No not everything is humor focused in there. The guide is more general. Hope that helps!

Thank you! Would love a specifically humor-focused guide in the future!

thank you so much for these posts - i literally did this : "If you have been submitting a piece and haven’t had luck placing it somewhere. Shifting the form might help you to get it picked up." and just got a piece picked up to Weekly Humorist that had been getting rejected elsewhere! :)

Congrats! I think it definitely helps to shift gears sometimes.

100 words and I can say I've been published in NYT? Okay then.

Yep, it's an option!

If you want to publish articles you've already written on your Substack, you would want to look for publications that accept reprints. A lot of traditional publications want unpublished submissions, but there are some that will run reprints.

Looking at Medium publications might be a place to start, as I think some of them will run reprints: https://medium.com/medium-handbook/how-new-writers-can-find-a-publication-for-their-story-using-mediums-huge-list-of-publications-d826e0195566
