Hello,
I’m back after taking last month off from the newsletter. I got some good travel/downtime in and also migrated this newsletter to Substack because it has some functionality I was looking for.
This means the newsletters and other relevant content will live on Substack but (I think) may not mean a lot of difference for how this email looks arriving in your inbox.
I put up a few other writing-related resources on the Substack site too that you can check out here. I’m working on getting some of the older newsletters up but they are not all there yet. Maybe sometime in the next five years?
This month I’ve got funny stuff and writing links on viral pieces and a market that seems to be running a lot of freelance pieces.
Books, humor, and other distractions
My husband showed this Trogdor video to my kids and it made us all laugh. I don’t remember seeing it in the past but maybe you have?
I am obviously a fan of introvert humor so I appreciated this piece by Sally Miller and Vince Di Meglio.
Little Miss memes have taken over the internet! You can check out some of them on this account.
My family spent a lot of time in the car last month, some of them listening to the Family Road Trip Trivia Podcast, which can be a good way to pass some time if you are traveling in a car with kids.
Writing-related resources
Wondering how travel writers make money? This post has some good info.
I found this webinar about Amazon ads for traditionally published authors helpful.
This Brevity piece about having a piece go viral was an interesting perspective.
If you are submitting, Insider is a pub that seems to be running a lot of freelance pieces (including essays and book excerpts) lately. They have a pitch guide here and I frequently see their editors call for pieces on Twitter.
News from me:
I really enjoy Leslie Gaar’s podcast about mom creatives My Effin’ Desk, so it was great to get a chance to be on it. We talked about the path to publishing my book and submitting to McSweeney’s among other things. Check it out here or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hemingway wrote about leaving his baby with his cat in his memoir A Moveable Feast, so I took that idea a little further in this new humor piece for New Yorker Daily Shouts.
Sarah Garfinkel and I wrote some tips for adding humor to your writing for the Brevity blog.
I was quoted in this piece in Self about introverted parenting.
I wrote an essay about not cherishing every moment of parenting for TinyBeans.
That’s it for this month!
