Get Ready for the One Funny Line Challenge
Some ideas to prep for the challenge
If you are receiving this you signed up to participate in the One Funny Line Humor Writing Challenge that will begin on January 8th.
I find my success rate with writing challenges like this is higher when I do a little planning about what I’m going to work on during it. So, if you don’t already have a plan, you might want to make a quick one.
Here are some ideas for ways you could approach this:
You’ll get one writing prompt a day for the challenge so you can just plan to do the prompt each day. If you fall behind you could also come up with more than one line one day as writing more than one line for a prompt is definitely allowed.
You could commit to writing one joke a day to share on the social media account of your choice.
If you have a longer project you are working on (be it a book, essay, script, or something else). You could work on adding humor to at least one line in it each day.
You could brainstorm new humorous titles for existing or potential pieces each day or use this as a way to brainstorm fake news headlines for some of the sites that accept them.
If you have a Substack, you could use the challenge as a way to write some funny post titles, image captions, or humorous lines for posts.
Since I tend to get #distracted, I feel like challenges like this work better for me if I have a few different things I want to work on. So my plan is to have a list of things I could potentially work on.
I will probably do some of the prompts some days, write at least one social media joke other days, and maybe try to work on a humor essay and/or short satirical piece some of the other days.
Do you have a plan for what you will do for the challenge? Feel free to share it in the comments below!
Hi Julie!
The challenge for me is going to be the actual writing down of the funny thing every day, because there's no shortage of funny things leaving my face/brain on ANY given day. I live in a house full of funny people doing and saying funny things all day long. But I've never been very good at capturing any of it. So, I'm hoping to come up with a way to do that. The capturing part. If you have any tips, I'm open to your suggestions!
Also, do you plan to post the prompt at the same time each day??
I'm really looking forward to giving this a shot. More humor writing in 2024 is definitely a goal of mine. So, thanks for the kickstart. 🥂💜
This is going to be fun!
I write down humorous ideas every time something comes up. They usually turn into an essay on my stack. If there's not enough meat, they might translate to a one or two liner. Also, looking forward to your prompts and wanting to add more humor to my WIP novel.
Congrats on your story being one of the most read on McSweeneys! It brought back memories of camping with the kids. Hehehe.
