The challenge for me is going to be the actual writing down of the funny thing every day, because there's no shortage of funny things leaving my face/brain on ANY given day. I live in a house full of funny people doing and saying funny things all day long. But I've never been very good at capturing any of it. So, I'm hoping to come up with a way to do that. The capturing part. If you have any tips, I'm open to your suggestions!
Also, do you plan to post the prompt at the same time each day??
I'm really looking forward to giving this a shot. More humor writing in 2024 is definitely a goal of mine. So, thanks for the kickstart. 🥂💜
That sounds like a good plan! I feel like the Notes app in my phone is helpful for me for the capturing part since I usually have it with me. I try to jot things down in the notes app when I think of them and then at least I have a list to go back to when I have more time. I think some people also do this with a physical notepad.
I am planning to schedule the prompts to come out at the same time every day -- probably around 5am east coast time since I know some people write first thing in the morning. But I could adjust it earlier too if it would be helpful!
Early morning ET is perfect for me at least. My husband and I are accountability partners for getting our butts up early (him to workout, me to yoga and free write) before the kids, so this will be excellent fuel for that fire. Thanks again!
Mine, too Meg! I've been looking forward to this challenge as well. I've been listening to Bird by Bird, and Anne Lamott suggests index cards for jotting ideas. And if you're going out, fold one and put it in your back pocket, but fold it longways so you don't look bulky... Ha! Sage advice. :)
Love the index card idea. I have a million of those in my house for some reason. I should probably stock up on golf pencils, though. Because where does one stick a pen on their person so as not to look pointy? 😂
Bird by Bird has been recommended to me so many times. I should probably stop being stubborn and pick up a copy from the library. :-)
I write down humorous ideas every time something comes up. They usually turn into an essay on my stack. If there's not enough meat, they might translate to a one or two liner. Also, looking forward to your prompts and wanting to add more humor to my WIP novel.
Congrats on your story being one of the most read on McSweeneys! It brought back memories of camping with the kids. Hehehe.
It sounds like you have a good method! I also try to keep track of things when they pop into my head and sometimes they are only one-liners but sometimes become full pieces.
And thank you! Camping can definitely be an adventure with kids :)

See you around the water cooler soon!
This is going to be fun!
