Hi Julie--I loved this and found it funny that we both happened to have takes on I'll Show Myself Out this week (but not nearly as funny as your secret notes, which are hilarious).
Ha, I just sent you an email about this, but I think humor is so subjective so I completely understand the different takes. I feel like some of her essays were more touching than funny and I thought the framing of motherhood as a a hero's journey was smart. But I definitely read things that several people tell me are funny and I don't find them funny. I think it's sometimes about the format I read them in too or as you said just timing in your life. In any event, happy to see you on Substack too! We need more Julies around here :)
Yes, my timing was off, and it's subjective. I tend to find books funnier on audiobook (assuming a good narrator) than on the page, too. My daughters are also much older, so my perspective might not be a great fit (though I do like to think of myself as midlife, whether or not that's still statistically plausible!). Anyway, thanks for the welcome to Substack, happy to add to the Julies. :-)
Oooh! I will check out your guest spot on friend making. Obviously up my alley. Can’t wait to see your new humor pieces too.
Yes! Definitely up your alley. She is doing a friendship series :)

Very special medicine. I just can't remember what it is.
