My family is all musical (my grandpa was a trumpeter, my grandma a violinist, my mom and siblings pianists) and I never got whatever it is that made music work in my hands, so I applaud your musical kiddos and their instrument carrying grit!

It's so interesting because I feel like I liked it okay when I played but was never super into it, but my oldest is really into it/talking about playing multiple instruments. Its interesting to see what different people are and aren't drawn to.

Can't go wrong with the trombone!

True! Easier to carry than the Tuba. One of yours is playing trombone too, right?

Yep! Playing tonight with the high school band at the football game, in fact.

Why do our kids refuse to learn from our life experience??

I know! Our experience is hard-earned!

I had to pick an instrument in 5th grade growing up too. I went drums because we already had my dad’s old trap set in the basement. An item my parents probably regretted clinging onto. Luckily for them, halfway through 6th grade I called it quits because the band director was having difficulty recognizing my prodigious talents (I was pretty good and thought I should be able to skip practice consistently. He disagreed.)

I can see how that may have caused some disagreement. I remember that percussion was very popular at my school but there were limited spots that you had to try out for so I marked that one off my list.

Julie, I love this photo of you! As the mother of a baritone player, I can relate! That thing took up half our living room! Thank you again for sharing your office (and Muffin!) with me! Xx

Oh, nice! I remember we practiced with a baritone but he got to leave his instrument at school. But maybe he had one at home too? In any event, always happy to share more photos of Muffin with the internet!

As a shrimpy kid who lugged a tenor sax to school for seven years, I regret nothing!

This is good to know! My kids do not seem as concerned with the lugging as I was so maybe that tuba will be in our future 😂

This made me laugh because my son (kid number 4) chose the French Horn. It’s not easy to carry, and it’s not easy to make pleasant sounds. 🙉 My daughters had all played things like piano, guitar, ukulele… sigh. Love your posts!

Solidarity and thank you! French Horn has also been mentioned as an interest for one of my kids but that is not one that they let them start on. But I've heard it is tough to play!

Love the writing space and all these links! My son plays the trumpet and has elected to *never bring it home* despite practice at home being required.

Oh that is a solid option 😂. My oldest did not bring it home that much when he was playing the clarinet but when he switched to bass clarinet/sax he wants to bring them home more. Which is good for practicing but just requires some juggling.
